Life Doesn’t Frighten Me:
Hope Inspired Through Art
Life Doesn’t Frighten Me, is an exhibition and book promoting conversations (through Art) about Life and Hope.
Our first showing was in the Fallbrook Ca. Library from March 10 – May 5, 2019. With a reception and performance of music and Poetry on March 15. We will be exhibiting some of this work, and adding Sacramento artists at the California Visionaries Summit in September 19-22.
The title of this exhibition of photographs and paintings is based on a poem of hope by Maya Angelou. The imagery and writing includes things that kids and youth think about or fear. The 13 artists work with families and youth often in crisis. The work in this exhibition strives to promote hope, encourage community support, and a more compassionate future. We intend to grow this project.
Every child needs a Safe Harbor, a place they can feel hopeful, especially now. The suicide rate of teens is soaring, fears about safety and justice are spreading division, climate change and immigration are in the news daily. Meanwhile, opportunities for community building through the arts have been shrinking. A huge loss. Art can portray life in a way that bypasses struggles and promotes hope and understanding by building communities of compassion.
We need compassionate professional artists to lead the way. Curator Kira Carrillo Corser has 30-years’ experience producing collaborative, community and social justice arts programs, including work locally and nationally, like the Carter Center, the Center for Civil and Human Rights and on PBS, HBO and NBC. She has a Journalism degree from San Diego State, worked 10 years for KPBS TV and Radio, and has a Masters in Fine Art with numerous awards and nationally traveled exhibitions and books. She lives in Fallbrook, CA.
